USSD Uses
When a user sends a message to the phone company network, it is received by a computer dedicated to the USSD. The computer’s response is sent back to the phone, usually in a native format that can be easily viewed on the phone display. Messages sent over USSD are not defined by any standardization body, so each network operator can implement whatever is most appropriate for their customers.
USSD can be used to provide independent calling services such as callback service (to reduce phone charges while roaming), enhance mobile marketing capabilities, or interactive data services.
USSD is commonly used by prepaid GSM cellular phones for inquiring about the available balance. The seller’s “Check Balance” application hides the details of the USSD protocol from the user. On some pay-as-you-go networks, such as Tesco Mobile, once a user performs an action that costs money, the user sees a USSD message with their new balance. USSD can also be used to refill the balance on the user’s SIM card and provide a one-time password or PIN code.
Some operators use USSD to provide access to real-time updates from social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter; Wikipedia uses USSD to send articles to some feature phones.

Most GSM phones have USSD capability. And USSD is usually associated with real-time or instant messaging (IM) services. USSD does not offer a store-and-forward capability, as is typical for other short message protocols, such as SMS.
USSD services use the existing architecture of the GSM network. A user dialing a USSD service code initiates a dialogue with the USSD app on the mobile network. The network node may be a mobile switching center, visitor location register, home locator register; or other network entity, such as an application platform, that has access to a specific USSD service.
Technically, USSD enables the mobile station user and a public land mobile network operator-defined application to communicate in a manner that is transparent to the mobile station user and intermediate network entities.
A typical USSD message begins with an asterisk (*) followed by digits that contain the command or data. Groups of digits can be separated by an additional asterisk. The message ends with a hashtag (#).
