The Space Applications Center (SAC) at Ahmedabad is spread over two campuses with multi-disciplinary activities. The core competence of the center lies in the development of space-borne and air-borne instruments/payloads and their applications for national development and social benefit. These applications are in diverse fields and mainly cater to the communication, navigation, and remote sensing needs of the country. Apart from these, the center has also contributed significantly to ISRO’s scientific and planetary missions like Chandrayaan-1, Mars Orbiter Mission, etc. Communication transponders are developed in this Center for Indian National Satellite (INSAT) and Geosynchronous Satellite (GSAT) series of satellites. Used by government and private sector for VSAT, DTH, Internet, Broadcasting, Telephone, etc.

Main Engine and Stage Test Facility at SAC The center also designs and develops optical and microwave sensors for satellites, signal and image processing software, GIS software, and several applications for the Earth Observation (EO) program of ISRO. These applications are in diverse fields of geology, agriculture, environment and climate change, physical oceanography, biological oceanography, atmosphere, cryosphere, hydrosphere, etc. SAC’s facilities include highly sophisticated payload integration laboratories, electronic and mechanical manufacturing facilities, and environmental testing facilities. , System Reliability/Assurance Group, Image Processing and Analysis Facilities, Project Management Support Group, and a well-stocked library. SAC has active collaborations with industry, academia, and national and international institutions for research and development. The center also conducts a nine-month postgraduate diploma course for students from the Asia Pacific region under the aegis of the Center for Space Science and Technology Education (CSSTE-AP) in Satellite Meteorology and Communication.
