So in 2000, Google began selling ads, thus introducing Google AdWords/AdSense. So these ads relied on a pay-per-click compensation structure, for example, if someone tapped on your ad connection you would be paid for your promotion.
And the term PageRank was preserved in September 2001. That same year Larry Page stepped down as CEO of Google and Eric Schmidt. Hence selected as the new CEO of Google.
